Workshops descriptions:
1) Water Conservation: Building a Movement
Facilitator: Kevin Freedman, Water as a Right Conservation Challenge
1:00 pm-2:00 pm
Water is (cliché warning) one of the essentials of life. Kevin Freedman conducted a unique awareness campaign throughout the month of June 2009 to promote water conservation by severely reducing his water intake. This workshop will discuss the major water issues facing us and why water will be one of the most important environmental and political issues of the 21st century. It will also talk about the making of a movement and how Kevin was able to reach so many people in such a limited time.
2) Exploring School Gardens
Special guest: gardener Millie Richard and Wendy Simonson of Evergreen
1:00 pm-2:00 pm
If you’re involved in bring gardening to your school, or at least have started wondering about the possibility, this is a space for visioning and learning with other students on how to get these projects started and what it takes to make them succeed. Come with your questions and/or advice for other student gardeners.
3) Engaging the Enemy? (or working with people who don’t see it your way)
Facilitator : Anders Swanson, One Green City
2:15 pm-3:15pm
Anders Swanson brings a wealth of experience with community advocacy groups that have learned how to get things done. This workshop will walk you through three basic steps to advocating, successfully, for change:
1) know your s**t
2) look for consensus
3) make art
4) Powering Our Schools with Renewable Energy
Special guest: Mikhail Kolybaba, former member of Vincent Massey Sustainable Development Committee
2:15 pm-3:15pm
If you’re involved in bring alternative energy to your school, or at least have started wondering about the possibility, this is a space for visioning and learning with other students on how to get these projects started and what it takes to make them succeed. Mikhail Kolybaba, who was instrumental in the early stages of implementing an Alternative Energy Array at his high school, will kick-off the discussion. Come with your questions and/or advice for other students working on wind, solar or geothermal projects.
