An Unlikely Leader

If you're looking for organisations outside the environmental movement that are pushing sustainability in a major way, a few corporations may come to mind.  Starbucks, say which sees being green as a way to attract employees.  Or perhaps even NewsCorp, which recently became carbon-neutral (ironically enough, given its ownership of such outlets as fox news).  Certain governments, too, are making the push.  Chances are, though, that the US millitary wouldn't come to mind. That's right, the US…See More

Power Summer (Prairies) at TBA

July 14, 2011 to July 17, 2011
Power Summer is a plan to create 6 regional camps across Canada to train grassroots youth organizers from coast to coast. Each camp will include training in popular education, action & strategy, communications, messaging, campaign planning, and other quintessential organizing skills, while building our understanding of climate justice and how we build a movement to get it. These 3 day, weekend long camps will use participatory, direct education to train the next generation of climate…See More

Environmentalists of the world, Unite!

The environmental movement looks completely different from the inside than it does from the outside.  Often, somebody on the outside looking in, it seems to be much more united, much larger than it actually is.  First, the movement seems to be animated by a (relatively) smaller group of hyperactive, workaholic types.  That, though, is not what I want to talk about.           Recently, as I mentioned in my last post, i was in New York for the 2nd Prepcomm for the rio summit.  While…See More

At the United Nations.

Late last year, in the closing month of 2010, I found myself having a phone con-versation with my superior at an NGO I belong to. This itself was not unusual. The topic, however, was. Did I want to go to New York City in March to participate in some UN meetings? Invitations to events in other cities and countries come fairly often if you’re involved in the environmental movement, but the nature of it is that that you have to turn down most of them. This time though, they were actually offering…See More

The Power of the People

If like many people you have been following the news recently, you ahve been witness to a historic event.  First, there was tunisia- spontaneous protests spread like wildfire throughout the country, and before anybody really realised what had happened, the ruling Ben Ali family had been outsted.  Shockwaves rippled through the arab world, and others began to wonder if they could do the same.  And now, only nineteen days later, the Egyptian Government, police state and all, has been toppled. …See More

Snow Snow Snow, Whither Global Warming?

Looking back on 2010, the dominant story was weather.  Earlier this year, major european airports like London's Heathrow, Amsterdam's Schipol, and Paris's Charles De Gaulle were thrown into chaos because of snow.  Remember the people snowed in on Ontario's Hwy 402? or the Trans Canada near Calgary?  Every state in the US except florida has reported snow this winter.  So in the midst of all this, we are justified in wondering, what has happened to global warming?          First off,…See More

Mixed Emotions over Cancun.

After the debacle in Copenhagen last year, many of us, including eminent environmentalists such as David Suzuki had lost faith in the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) process. However, the Cancun Summit (known in UN lingo as COP16) has started to restore that faith.First, a little background. The UNFCCC is an international treaty that arose out of the Earth Summit in 1992. Every member of the United Nations signed the treaty (making them parties to the UNFCCC). While the…See More

This is our monthly gathering for anyone who's young and green. All are welcome!Normally we meet at Mondragon from 4:30 to 6:30. But this month we'll be at the Eco-Centre for some inter-generational mingling at their Holiday Open House. If you've never visited the Eco-Centre before, you'll find it on the 3rd floor of the Mountain Equipment Coop…See More
