Hi Mikhail,

The Manitoba Student Transportation Network whole-heartedly supports bus use! Taking the bus in comparison to driving is much better in terms of emissions, but also on a large scale improves safety, reduces traffic, noise... the list goes on... plus for people with mobility issues, or people who just really don't want to bike in -30 weather, the bus is a pretty important option to have.

There are a lot of variables when comparing emissions based on different modes (eg. make/model of car, how full is the carpool, how much time is spent idling in heavy traffic, how full/empty is the bus, etc)... but yeah, cycling and walking are going to win pretty much every time, even calculating in extra food costs (thought there are variables there too! how much meat, how much local/organic food, etc). Check out this website for a good general summary of emissions by mode: http://www.sightline.org/maps/charts/climate-CO2byMode and another one here for long-distance: http://www.saxifrages.org/eco/show1h0s/Climate_Emissions_by_Type_of_Vehicle ... though even those doesn't calculate in the energy required to build the cars, vans, airplanes (or bicycles for that matter) in the first place.

Thanks for the questions!

Hi Stephanie,
I hope you're doing well. I was curious about the Manitoba Student Transportation Network: what is the position on buses? Do you consider it part of the commuter challenge to take a bus? What about on Car Free Day? I assume that car free day is also ideally free of trucks, vans, and SUVs, but what about buses?

I'm 19, and I've never even taken the written test to get a learner's license -- I just bus most places. But I don't bike or walk very much (I live in the suburbs). Do you have any information on how emissions from busing compare to emissions from driving, and even to emissions from biking or walking (in the production of food, which is consumed more to support physical activity)? I'd be really interested to find out how taking a bus in Winnipeg compares with driving a hybrid car, or carpooling in a small car, or driving a van.
