Right now, at the Eco-Network, 2 fabulous volunteers from Canada World Youth are helping out at the office. Regina is involved with a similar organization in Kenya: KENVO. In this blog she tells us about how KENVO works.


introduction:
Kijabe Envoroment Volunteers [kenvo] is a community based organization in the central province of Kenya.kenya is divided into eight provinces,central province being one of them.
KENVO:It was established in 1994 and registered in 1996 by a group of post graduates who identifield a gap in their immediate community ,kijabe location where there was a rampat and un-sustainable forest destruction.this was in the face of charcoal burning,timber harvesting and farming.the need to address this issue came up with young people but they needed support.
ACTIVITIES:bird-watching,tree nursery which they used to raise seedlings.they got donors from different Nationals and inter-national bodies e.g United Nations Environment Programs [UNEP],Bp and others.currently they have more donors coming in with different concepts and one that is important to mention here is the Manitoba Council of International Donors [M.C.I.C] which is supporting energy saving initiatives with Kijabe,with an aim of reducing deforestation through energy saving fuel resources such as bio-gas and wood stoves known locally as jikos.
KENVO MEMBERSHIP:kenvo has a majority of membership drawn from young people who have finished their high school and thus making them the majority members.it has a corporate members,family members and then the donors.the youth has a category requiring a certificate from their high schools and they need to have volunteered with the group for atleast 3 months prior to their date of registration.
VISION:Kikuyu environment forest and other natural resources conserved and supporting livelihoods.
MISSION:Working with the local communities and partners to conserve the natural habitats and their biological diversity.
ACTIVITIES: 1,schools outreach program;kenvo works with local schools in Lari District to catalyse environment conservations activities within the schools e.g training students,establishing tree nurseries.2,Forest restoration;kenvo is currently for instance, a project dubbed “greening kereita”[sponsored by UNEP and Carbacid] is a tree planting initiatives that aims at promoting responsible consumer behavourby planting as many trees as the reams of paper used at UNEP.a total of 30 ha. of indigenous trees have so far been planted.3,eco-tourism;apart from supplementing the local livelihoods through provision of fuel-wood and other necessities,the forest offers an excellent for other services like eco-tourism through bird watching and camping.
PARTNERS:Local communities;1.carbacid;plant manager facilitating research and responding to the questionnaires.2.Kereita Forest and Wildlife Conservation Associations;committees have acted as a mirrior to what should be, and should have been done.3,Local Schools;they have helped in maintaining the already established nursery beds.4.Kenvo Volunteers;planting trees and taking care of it.
Govermental partners;fisheries departments,Kenya wildlife services,local administrations and National Museums of Kenya.
N.G.OS,non financial;the east-africa wildlifesociety,Birdlife internationals global and Africa secretaries,Nature Kenya birdlife internationals partner Kenya,International center for insect physiological and ecology[ICIPE] for offering training,World Agro-forestly centre[ICRAF] for the intial training and the African Conservation Centre.
